I've written many macro articles for photo magazines, but I've only had one image on a cover of a magazine. The image was a fall-colored leaf on a Birch tree trunk. Over my 21 years of shooting, I have used trunks of birch tree as backgrounds for a main subject. The birch tree has very interesting and artistic bark that totally enhances the main subject. I started out using a leaf as the main subject but have also used other subjects as well.
