Get Out of Bed Early in the Morning

If you have photographed small critters like dragonflies, butterflies, etc., you know they are not easy to shoot during the warm parts of the day.

Simple solution is to get out of bed early in the morning and find the critters.

It can't be any morning, has to be when the temperatures dip down in the upper 40s to low 50s.

When this happens the cold air lowers the body temperature of all the small critters to the point that they cannot move or fly until the air temps warm up and their bodies and then they are on their way.

Study the fields near your home for critter activity during the daytime, and those same critters have to land somewhere for the night.

You get out there in the field at daybreak on those cool mornings and search for the critters.  Once you find them you can set up your tripod, maybe work your backgrounds behind them and they are not going anywhere until the air warms up.

So, you do have a limited time to shoot as in the summer months the air can warm up quickly if the sun is out.

Here is a pair of butterflies on the right side and on the left side of the frame a dragonfly wanting to be photographed.

They are not easy to find, so you have to go slowly though the field and have a keen eye to find them.

One other benefit of shooting critters at daybreak is less to no wind, which rarely happens later in the day.

All my critters are shot this way and I never go out during the warm daytime hours and chase them around having to hand hold the camera or use a flash for quicker shutter speeds.
