Macro Photography - Beyond Flowers and Bugs

I am fortunate to have three parks within twenty minutes of my home that provide a diverse ecosystem where I photograph most of my macro subjects. I occasionally run into other nature photographers at these parks; and the question is always asked, “What are you shooting?” When I tell them I’m a macro photographer, they generally say, “Oh you’re one of those bug shooters.” When I tell them that I do not shoot a lot of bugs, they respond with the statement that I must shoot a lot of flowers.

This is the perception most people have when you tell them you are photographing macro subjects in nature. Flowers and bugs make good macro subjects, but there are so many other subjects that we can photograph that create great artwork.

I’ve been very fortunate to win awards in many photo contests and every one of those winning images were of subjects other than flowers and bugs. I believe my success as a pro macro photographer is from expanding outside of the perception of a macro photographer.
